Mary (197?-2004)

One of our first mares, Mary, died in 2004 at nearly 30 years old. She was a fine lady - did anything you asked of her. We were privileged to buy Mary, along with her half-sister, Molly, in June, 1986. They taught us a lot about working draft horses, and were very tolerant of our errors in the early years. Mary spent the last 8 years of her life working as a therapy horse for our favorite non-profit, Therapeutic Horsemanship of West Michigan. She was a favorite mount for a number of handicapped children and adults, and pulled a cart made especially to accommodate wheelchair-bound people. She was greatly loved by many people, and will be greatly missed.

The gang of thieves: L to R, Mabel, Karen, Charlie, Molly, & Mary (I think with all those black horses, who can tell?)

And here's Twin Lakes Margaret Degas, who is 3 years old in these photos - 1998.

Matriarchs Molly and Mary take a break; mowing oat hay. BTW, after retiring from farm work with us, Molly and Mary resided until their deaths at the Therapeutic Horsemanship of West Michigan Facility in Coopersville, where they were used to pull a wheelchair-equipped cart and to be the steady, sturdy ladies they were for vaulting classes. If you have such a facility in your area (and you probably do), check it out and get involved. It's fun and rewarding! You don't have to be an experienced horseperson to volunteer.

Two of our animals who are no longer with us: Count's Memory (Arab mare), familiarly known as "Mem" or "Skanky Mae" by Conni, who rode her, and as "that !*@&#^$% Airhead" by Darrell, who tolerated her. Mem was sold in December of 1999 to a woman who wanted a horse for her daughter to show. She has since had a foal, as well.

The dog in the photo is Freckles, former Official Farm Puppy and Chief of Farm Security.
It's a serious job for a serious dog. Unfortunately, our "bud" left us in October of 1999 after suffering from kidney failure at the age of 10 years. We lost all three dogs that year, but the other two were older and their passing was not unexpected.

On the left is Lacy, a Thoroughbred mare, known by her owner Kenny as "Dippy" and other, less flattering, names. Darrell says these she is so dumb that if brains were dynamite, she couldn't muster enough power to blow her nose. But Kenny loves to ride her, so it all works out.
